Janice Bellace

In the course of her career at the University of Pennsylvania, Janice Bellace has served as a faculty member, undergraduate dean, and deputy dean (overseeing all divisions) at the Wharton School. She also served for one year as interim associate dean of development during the midst of a major fundraising campaign. In 1993, Bellace proposed a dual degree program to be offered jointly by the Wharton School and the School of Arts and Sciences at Penn. At present, she is director of the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business.

At the university level, Bellace served as Penn’s associate provost and deputy provost from 2004 to 2007, positions which involved: oversight of faculty recruitment, appointments and promotions; undergraduate education; graduate education; the office of student conduct; the office of the chaplain; and several arts and culture professional entities on campus. In her role overseeing the faculty, Bellace revamped and significantly extended policies to further work-life balance, and increase the recruitment and retention of women. During this period she also chaired the steering committee for NCAA recertification.

Since the early 1990s, Bellace has been active in developing diverse educational opportunities outside the United States for American students. She championed the foreign language requirement for undergraduate business students at Penn, and subsequently initiated undergraduate study abroad programs in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Madrid, Milan, and Lyon. In 1999, Bellace became the founding president of Singapore Management University, and is currently on its Board of Trustees, and chair of its academic affairs committee. She also serves on the advisory board of Koc University in Istanbul.

Since 1992, Bellace has also been active in the area of health care. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she chairs the Methodist Hospital Committee (a community hospital), and serves on the Quality Committee.

The author of numerous books, chapters, articles and papers, Dr. Bellace's research interests are in the field of labor and employment law, both domestic and international. She is a member of the Committee of Experts at the International Labor Organization, and has served as secretary of the Section on Labor and Employment Law of the American Bar Association. She is currently president-elect of the International Industrial Relations Association.

Education: Bellace received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and her J.D. from Penn’s Law School. She received an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, where she studied on a Thouron Fellowship.
